- New Prescription Opioid Campaign: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched its first prescription opioid prevention campaign, Rx Awareness, to increase recognition of prescription opioid abuse and overdose. Although the campaign defines its target audience as 25-54 year olds, research indicates that those exposed to prescription opioids for reasons other than chronic pain made up the younger cohort of those aged 25-35.
- Pedestrian and Bike Safety: Campuses are bustling with pedestrians and bicyclists, regardless of weather conditions or time of year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 5,376 pedestrians (up from 4,884 in 2014) and 818 bicyclists (up from 729 in 2014) were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2015.

- Red Ribbon Campaign: The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will kick off its annual Red Ribbon Campaign on October 23, 2017. Red Ribbon Week is the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program and is officially celebrated from October 23-31, with some schools and communities holding events throughout the month.
- The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security: The University of Southern Mississippi established the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) in 2006. NCS4 developed a partnership with the Texas Engineering Extension Service's National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center, a member of the Texas A&M University System, to create and deliver DHS and FEMA-approved sport security training workshops for emergency responders, senior officials, and medical personnel conducting sporting events.

- Bullying and Cyberbullying: October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a nationwide campaign founded in 2006 by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. The National Bullying Prevention Month campaign encourages communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on people of all ages.

- Cybersecurity is Our Shared Responsibility: October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), a time to raise awareness about the importance of individual cyber hygiene and our shared responsibility to promote and practice cybersecurity.
- JED Campus: JED Campus, a nationwide initiative launched by The JED Foundation, guides colleges and universities through a collaborative process of comprehensive systems and program and policy development that includes customized support and technical assistance to build upon existing student mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention efforts.
